It's a new course taught by me in this fashion school. I used to teach fashion marketing and research, but this new semester, pedagogy department asked me to handle this course. It's basically a course of understanding different negotiation techniques, conflict handling, emotional control, and dealing with multi-cultural behavior.
It's a challenging course for myself, since this course is subjective-approaching. No textbooks provide a very precise technique, however there are some books about it in the library/bookstores.
The best negotiator usually has it in his/her blood, experiences, or from learning from the master. But a new negotiator that wants to master it found that textbooks only provide guidance. Without his/her personal communication skills and emphaty, he/she could lose a sale from the negotiation deal.
So, let's talk to the business.
The midterm project for this class is a group assignment. I asked the students to work in three and prepared themselves with a project. The project was relatively simple. They would acted as sales representatives from an Italian manufacturer, and they were presenting themselves for supplying to one of the biggest department store in Jakarta.
It was a great thing to do this project, since they could experience a real situation to make a closing with the representative of the department store. Some made good impression, but none lack of the skill.
The best way to negotiate is opening yourself to options, show empathy, be humble, offer solution, and try to close in a win-win solution. But just don't grab an offer without a fight.
